Ripples from La Prairie Voyageur Canoes -- My Voyageur Ancestry

Editor Jerry England at Rendezvous Reenactment in 1987

Jerry England’s collection of genealogy and research notes, about his French-Canadian ancestors and relatives who were involved in the fur trade during the 17th and 18th centuries.

Rather than printing his research in a book Jerry decided to published it online to be enjoyed by anyone who shares his ancestry.  He considers the work to be a "Genealogy Act of Kindness," which he believes will generate its own rewards.

  1. Hi Jerry,

    I'm planning a trip through Quebec in July for both a summer vacation and to conduct in person genealogy. I've learned that my 4th - 6th grandparents lived in La Prairie, Canada from the early 1700's to the mid-1800's. I'm wondering if I do go, where I would go to see if I can find birth and death records - and any other information (old local newspapers on microfiche, for example). I know this is a tall order but I learned that no everything is digitized and some information has to be found in person. Do you have any advice? I'm also open to paying for genealogy assistance while I'm there.

    Absolutely no worries if you do not but I thought I would reach out to ask.

    If you're curious, the surnames of my great grandparents who lived there are the following: Boisdore, Gagne, Barbeau, Bulteau, Muir, Bertrand and Gauthier

    Thanks so much!

  2. Hi Bob,

    Most of my research came from reading and online records. Ancestry and Quebec archives have a lot to offer. If I was going to make that trip I'd try to locate a Montreal area genealogist who could do some of the early research first. Good luck.

    Regards,

    Jerry

  3. Great research indeed Jerry!

    Kudos to the great blog!

    I’m a newcomer in the field of genealogy ... but a fan of French Canadian History (being myself French Canadian), married to a Rousseau (F) - Perras (M) ! I’ve also decided to leave this great “gift” to our kids, which I’m convinced, one day, they will appreciate (-;

    Best regards,

    Francois
